Royal Recruits are one of my favorite troops in Clash Royale. They’re able to counter almost any tank, and the counter pushes they make are amongst the best. And with their evolution (or even without it), they make a great centerpiece for a deck.
Below, I’ll take a look at three of the best Royal Recruits decks in Clash Royale. Let’s get right into it!
What are Royal Recruits and How to Play Them
Royal Recruits are a pretty simple card, and so is their evolution. The non-evolved version simply spawns six Recruits in a line across the battlefield. You can position them so they split 4-2 across the bridge, or you can go 3-3. They each have a shield similar to that of the Guards, which allows them to absorb the first hit they take without taking damage. This is strong against one-shot spells like the Log and Fireball, and against troops that take a while to attack. Evolved Royal Recruits function the same way, except they do a Prince-like charge forward after their shields have been broken. This makes them even better against spells, so it limits your opponent’s options further.
When it comes to how to play Royal Recruits, there’s a clear way to do so. They excel at countering tanks which don’t have enough damage output to get through their shields and kill them quick enough. Even Mega Knight can be beaten by them, even though he does splash damage. As a group, they’re extremely deadly. Especially if you’re able to lure five onto one side (six is extremely rare). Against something like Mega Knight it’s important to split them on both sides so they don’t all take damage together, and the same is true against most threats as a precaution. Then they make a really strong counter push since at least two of them tend to survive most interactions.
Royal Recruits Log Bait
Cards:
- Firecracker (Evolution)
- Royal Recruits (Evolution)
- Knight
- Goblin Barrel
- Goblin Gang
- The Log
- Tombstone
- Golden Knight
As with any Log Bait deck, the goal here is to bait your opponent into using their Log or Barbarian Barrel on either Royal Recruits or Goblin Gang. Then, Goblin Barrel is open to reign terror on your opponent’s towers. This deck doesn’t go as all in on this aspect as some more traditional versions, though. Royal Recruits can’t be hard countered with the Log, as their shield absorbs the impact and they’re split across the arena. But opponents often still use it on them anyway, especially if one side is already covered by a troop. Royal Recruits are also just generally really strong as defense troops, and they can counter almost every tank in the game. Everything from Goblin Giant to Mega Knight gets countered by Royal Recruits.
Another thing I really like in this deck is the double Knights. The standard Knight is my favorite cheap tank, as he can distract troops for a really long time for only 3 elixir. Golden Knight accomplishes the same thing, but he’s better offensively. His legendary effect allows him to also counter swarms and do increased damage, so he’s great in counter pushes. I also have evolved Firecracker in this deck since it’s so strong in pretty much every way, and Tombstone is here since it’s the cheapest building that actually does a good job at defense.
This deck is more defensive than anything, so you want to wait for your opponent to give you a chance to build up a counter push. Royal Recruits, Golden Knight, and Firecracker all make a killer push, and Goblin Barrel is great for creating offensive pressure elsewhere.
Royal Recruit + Goblin Cage and Mighty Miner
Cards:
- Royal Recruits (Evolution)
- Goblin Cage (Evolution)
- Royal Hogs
- Electro Wizard
- Fireball
- Mighty Miner
- Electro Spirit
- Barbarian Barrel
While the last deck was certainly more reactive, this one is even more so. Pretty much everything here is meant for defending and making counter pushes, except for Royal Hogs. As I’ve covered, Royal Recruits are amongst the best ways to defend against tank-based pushes, but Goblin Cage and Mighty Miner also contribute to that. The Cage’s evolution beats just about everything on the ground, and Mighty Miner essentially functions as a ground-based Inferno Dragon. Between these three cards, nothing on the ground is getting through to your towers without a lot of effort.
To defend against air-based troops, our main resources are Electro Wizard and the Cage (if it’s a building-targeting troop like Balloon). Electro Wizard is fantastic all-around, but you could replace it with something like Flying Machine or even Minions if you wanted lower elixir cost. Then we also have Fireball and Barbarian Barrel to clear out any swarms. On the offensive side, Royal Hogs are the deck’s main way to deal damage outside of counter pushes. They’re great since you can split them across the arena to cause chaos or focus them on one side when your opponent is low on elixir.
Your best bet with this deck is to play around your opponent’s cards so that you can make effective counter pushes. This is the case with almost all Royal Recruit decks (except for the next one) since they’re so strong at that strategy. Royal Hogs give you the ability to apply pressure, though, so you won’t get overwhelmed constantly.
Royal Recruits Tower Destruction
Cards:
- Royal Recruits (Evolved)
- Wall Breakers (Evolved)
- Hog Rider
- Spirit Empress
- Goblin Gang
- Barbarian Barrel
- Ice Wizard
- Guards
As opposed to the other decks in this list, this one is much more aggressive. Evolved Wall Breakers and Hog Rider exclusively attack buildings, so they’re able to make tons of offensive pushes. Wall Breakers are cheap enough that you can cast them while holding up the more defensive troops, while Hog Rider is better when your opponent leaves an opening. Counter pushes are obviously also strong here. Once your Royal Recruits start making their way across the bridge, Hog Rider and/or Wall Breakers are even easier to connect with a tower.
For defense here, I’ve chosen the brand new Spirit Empress as the main troop. I think she’s really strong, as she’s the first card to have multiple elixir costs. You can cast her for either 3 or 6 elixir (it automatically chooses for you based on if you have enough for the 6-cost version or not), which makes her extremely versatile. She attacks both ground and air troops, and she does really strong damage. The only difference between versions it that she’s ground-based for 3 or air-based for 6. We also have support/defensive cards like Goblin Gang, Ice Wizard, and Guards to utilize here too. Plus Barbarian Barrel to counter Goblin Barrel whenever it shows up.
This deck is a little less consistent since it can be countered effectively by buildings, especially Bomb Tower. But I think it’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses. It’s a very powerful deck that can do a lot of damage if you play it correctly. You just have to be careful not to over-extend offensively. I wouldn’t recommend using Hog Rider and Wall Breakers back-to-back until double elixir, as you want to save elixir for Royal Recruits whenever possible. But having Spirit Empress to cast cheaply when needed as well as Goblin Gang and Guards to counter dangerous ground-based threats helps a lot.
